What is an addictive disorder?
Addiction is defined as a chronic, relapsing brain disease that is characterized by compulsive use and behaviors, despite harmful consequences. An addictive disorder occurs when the use of a substance—such as alcohol or drugs—or a behavior – such as excessive gambling, shopping or gaming—causes significant problems in a person’s life. In most cases, people with addictions frequently suffer from a mental illness, such as depression, anxiety or another disorder.
When both an addiction and a mental illness are present, it is called a co-occurring condition. Co-occurring conditions can be difficult to diagnose and challenging to treat. Fortunately, the treatment team at Embrace Recovery and Wellness Center (ERWC) is adept at identifying underlying causes of addictions and can design a plan to address both the mental illness and the addiction.
Addiction symptoms and behaviors include, among others:
- Feeling the need to participate in behavior or use the drug regularly, which can be daily or multiple times a day
- Having intense urges for the behavior or substances
- Not meeting or changing obligations and work responsibilities in order to participate in behavior or use substances
- Focusing more and more time and energy on the behavior or getting and using the substance
- Failed attempts to quit or change the behavior or substance
If you can relate to any of the above symptoms or behaviors, it may be time to consider addiction counseling.
Our Treatment Approach
When the brain is hijacked by alcohol, drugs or addictive behaviors such as gambling, sex, etc., will-power becomes powerless. Yet your brain is resilient and so are you. The treatment program at ERWC is designed to take advantage of neuroplasticity – your brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections in order to adapt and adjust to new situations, experiences, and environments. Your resilience is a powerful force. We do this by offering a variety of treatment modalities to assist you on your recovery journey.
The fundamental clinical approaches used at the Embrace Recovery and Wellness Center (ERWC) are Trauma Informed Care and Motivational Interviewing as they take a person centered approach, promote positive self-regard, increase motivation, and create an atmosphere of compassion.
